UGA Security Issues and Virus Information for Your PC: Basic Non-Technical Overview
Prerequisites: An interest in computer security issues or virus protection.
During this lecture/discussion session, participants will be introduced to basic information about Internet security and computer security at UGA--including the University's computer security and ethics policies, password protection concerns, the UGA abuse team, and dealing with e-mail spam. How to take advantage of the University's recommended virus protection software and an introduction to viruses in e-mail will also be featured.

Computer Ethics and Security
Prerequisites: None.
UGA policies and Georgia and federal law determine what is acceptable and not acceptable when using the University's computers or networking systems. This seminar will review these policies and laws while also exploring issues relating to personal safety on the Internet and what to do if you suspect misuse or abuse of computer security on campus.

Computing Facilities and EITS Support Services

During this seminar participants will learn about the variety of computer resources available through the University's central computing and networking facilities. The focus will be on EITS assistance including:

Research Computing Options at UGA
Prerequisites: An interest in using new computational techniques for research.
The EITS Research and Computational Science group provides consulting services to UGA researchers who use computational techniques for research. We support commercial software packages for Computational Chemistry and Bioinformatics as well as for visualization and statistical analysis of data. We also assist researchers interested in developing their own programs or running commercial codes on our Research Computing Resource consisting of a 24-processor SGI Origin 2000 system and a 24-processor IBM SP system. In this seminar, participants will learn how to take advantage of the hardware, software, and services. If computations are in your future, this may be a seminar you won't want to miss.

Electrical, Security, and Other Considerations for Computer Locations
Prerequisites: None.
This seminar will identify a variety of electrical and heating questions to be answered before setting up a computer lab or even an individual PC in an office. Information will also be provided on how to determine whether intermittent hardware problems are power related and how to secure the computers from vandalism and theft. Topics include:

Participants may be network managers, departmental PC installation staff, or others whose duties involve setting up and maintaining computers. The seminar will include time for questions and answers about specific concerns.
