Mail Gateway
at UGAWhen configuring a system to handle mail, we recommend that local mail is delivered to the local users and that all other mail is handed off to a smart mailer on campus called mail-gw.uga.edu. Thus only a small number of machines on campus have to know how to deliver mail to UUCP, BITNET, etc.
This also simplifies things for the departmental machines as their sendmail configuration files rarely change and there is not a problem with a site being down, filling up their mail spool and potentially crashing a system. UCNS has taken on the problem of mail spool management in this case.
WSG maintains provides both binary and configuration files for sendmail for the systems we support on the anonymous ftp server at ftp.uga.edu/pub/unix/packages/sendmail.uga/. If these are used according to the instructions, then your mailer will point to mail-gw.uga.edu and function as described above.
