Consulting Services

For those directly affiliated with The University of Georgia, the UCNS Workstation Support Group provides pre-purchase consultation and technical support for workstations and departmental computing systems with UNIX or VMS operating systems.

The specific UNIX operating systems that we support are AIX, DEC UNIX, IRIX, Solaris and SunOS for workstations and Linux for PCs. If you are currently running another variant of UNIX and need assistance, we will be glad to assist you as best we can bearing in mind that we do not have staff trained on it.

One of our most important services is our pre-purchase consulting. Before you purchase a system, we will help you to find both the operating system and hardware best suited to your needs and as cost effectively as possible. We will be glad to get quotes from vendors for proposed systems for you and to ensure that you have all the components needed.

If your department has a technical support person and you are having problems with your UNIX/VMS system, then we recommend that you call that person first. If your department does not have such a person or that person requires assistance, then we will with help with the following:

System installation and upgrades
Security implementation
Configuration including e-mail
Network connection
System administration/management
Performance tuning
Problem determination/resolution
Installing user applications
Customized procedures
Planning upgrades

One distinction to note here is that we will help you to setup procedures for such things as creating accounts, backing up your system, etc. but it will be up to you to actually run the procedures and, for instance, ensure that the system is backed up routinely.

Workstation Support does NOT do hardware installations. You will need to have this done by the hardware maintenance contractor for your system. We recommend contacting the Electronic Design and Maintenance Shop for this.
