Using Offline Files:
My Documents Redirection
Windows 2000 Professional/XP Client
Server Setup
- Make sure you have a Windows NT 4 Domain or Windows 2000 Active Directory
enabled.
- Your users should be logging in directly to this Domain and not to their
local workstation.
- Create a file server to house the Offline Files. It should have a redundant
disk array and about 100MB per person. We'll call this file1.
- Create a folder under the root; we'll call ours docs for the example.
- Under this folder, create a folder for each user using their username as
the name for the folder. We'll call ours test.
- Under this folder, create a folder called My Documents.
- You should now have something that looks like this: x:\docs\test
or this: \\file1\docs\my documents
Server Security
- For each of the user's folders, NTFS permissions must be set. For this purpose,
well call the ACLs (Access Control Lists). Follow what is below for EACH and
EVERY user folder you have created.
- The ACL is found by right clicking on the folder, and choosing Properties.
Click on the Security tab.
- Remove every account in the list EXCEPT Domain Administrators (assuming
you are a part of that group). Please do not remove the primary group that
you belong to.
- Add the user's domain account to the list and give them full access. Add
full access to your group as well
- Imporant: UNCHECK the box that says Allow inheritable permissions
from parent to propogate to this object. This is an essential step
and will compromise security if not performed on every user folder.
- Share the docs folder, giving Domain Users Read and Execute permissions
and Domain Administrators full control. Be sure to remove the Everyone
group from all ACLs in both the Sharing and Security sections.
Client Setup
- Log in to the user's machine with their domain user account.
- Right click on My Computer and select Map Network Drive.
- We suggest using N as the drive letter but feel free to use something
else if your department already has naming conventions.
- For path, enter the following: \\file1\test\ where file1 is
your file server and test is the user's username.
- Ensure that Reconnect at logon is checked. Click Finish and you should
see a window with the new share.
- Right click on My Documents (either on the Desktop or within Windows
Explorer) and choose Properties.
- Click on the Move... button. Navigate to N:\My Documents (change
the drive letter if you did not use N) and click OK. Click Apply.
- Once this wizard is finished, right click on My Documents (same place
as above) and choose Make Available Offline.
- Complete the wizard and you are set to go!
