Windows NT/2000 News at UGA

17 March, 2002 - I have been authorized to set up a Central UGA Active Directory Forest for those departments who wish to participate. I am waiting for hardware to arrive which will hold the root. I will send out a notice to UGANET as soon as this service is available.

09 March, 2002 - UGA Gratuity Policies have, indeed, interfered with the free transportation to the Microsoft Technet event. There are several folks who are driving University vans to the event. If you need to try to find a ride, you can contact me.

03 March, 2002 - Mark Minasi will be speaking at a TechNet Event in Atlanta on March 26th. Microsoft has agreed to charter a bus for anyone who is interested in attending the event. Refreshments will be served on the bus. (This is not guaranteed yet, as UGA's gratuity policies may interfere.) I'll post more here when I know.

26 February, 2002 - After much research and discussion, we are ready to roll out our AD solution on campus. See the docs on the Active Directory page for more detail.

8 September, 2001 - There are lots of books that I rely on day to day for great Windows NT and 2000 information on the Resources page. It has been ages since I updated that page though, so there aren't any 2000 books on it yet. I will get to it very soon, I promise. I did add Mark Minasi's book as a 'must have' so you can always start there.

06 June, 2001 - I used to keep patches current on this site (including hotfixes!) but that no longer seems necessary since Microsoft has started offering the Windows Update service on their web site and we have a great connection to the internet.

20 February, 2001 - I guess the big news is the release of Windows 2000. It looks like a great operating system and seems very stable. It combines all of the security (and more) of Windows NT 4 with the hardware support and plug and play architecture of the Win9x family. Unfortunately, it relies on DNS for its Active Directory (directory services) architecture and we do not know how we will incorporate Windows2000 domain structures into the UGA network yet. We will keep you informed at this site and through the UGA Network Managers meetings as we make progress on this.

In the meantime, it is fine for Windows 2000 desktops to be installed on campus, as long as you turn off the automatic updates to the DNS servers on campus. Do this by doing the following:

Now you won't be bothering the BIND servers with useless requests to update their zones. They are not configured to deal with dynamic updates at this time.

10 December, 2000 - Here's the link to the <very sad> NT4 server class that I wrote. NT4 Class
